I recommend not going with X or framebuffer at all, complete bloatware. DWM, Openbox, FVWM2, etc all take WAY too long to compile and take up too much precious resources on my Athlon XP 2800+.
Go with sh for the shell, ls and cp for your file management, use wget and vi for web browsing.
Also, if you have a computer newer than a Pentium 3, I recommending building for a 16 bit processor, and use uclibc and -Os. That should also help with resource usage.
Sometimes my computer takes up over 1mb of RAM out of my 1gb, and when that happens, I immediately turn off my PC in fear of using up too many resources.
WMs and DEs are for newbs who like to waste resources.
Gentoo is also too bloated, and even Damn Small Linux is damn too big!
When it comes to kernel compile, deselect all drivers including mouse and keyboard.
