you choose openoffice or staroffice?

Openoffice is the open source version of Staroffice.  They are in principle the same, except:

1. Staroffice bunded with a database software which is proprietary (non-free).  However, Openoffice already provides you the necessary interface for use with MySQL.

2. In the past, Chinese support in Staroffice is poor.  However, Chinese support is backport from Openoffice and now, they are both OK.

3. There are additional templates supplied in Staroffice.

4. Staroffice is not free but you can obtain technical supports from Sun.

Poor man like me will only choose Openoffice.

But I really want to know which one is more compatible with microsoft word document. Can you tell me?

Almost the same, but Staroffice could be expected to do things better. However, in Chinese support Openoffice with firefly patch is better than above two for sure.

Unless the Word file is password protected or containing VBA scripts, compatibilities in 1.1.x is almost 90%+.  You only have problem table of contenton and slightly issues on graphics.
