James Chacon of the NetBSD release engineering team has sent a report covering the status of the NetBSD 2.0 branch to the netbsd-announce mailinglist. The report contains a schedule for the release cycle, and a list of 2.0-specific bugs that need to be closed. This is still a good time to help us making this the best NetBSD release ever, by trying out the latest snapshots, and reporting bugs.

  1. To: None <netbsd-announce@netbsd.org>
  2. From: James Chacon <jmc@netbsd.org>
  3. List: netbsd-announce
  4. Date: 07/26/2004 12:47:57

  5. Below is a summary of where we're at on the 2.0 release. As you'll notice,
  6. according to this schedule we would be in RC1, but due to the number of
  7. outstanding bugs we're not quite there yet.

  8. So, rather than reformulate another schedule I wanted to publish this to
  9. give folks an idea of where we're at and once RC1 tags approx how long it'll
  10. take before the release is done. I personally expect RC1 to tag within
  11. the next 2 weeks and we'll publish that here when it happens as well.

  12. Also attached are the list of critical PR's from testing that have been
  13. noted as critical. IPF 4.1.3 still remains to be merged into the branch at
  14. which point the remaining bugs will hopefully be fixed (or easy to fix).

  15. ------

  16. Original Branch date: Mar 28 2004

  17. Current schedule: - Slipped from original. Re-re-worked one is below:

  18. *Mar 29nd - July 17th - Beta period - Testing feedback and pullups
  19. July 18th - RC1 tag - Only pullups past this point are for showstoppers. Any
  20.                      pullups will cause a new RC cycle so be aware of this
  21.                      when asking for something.
  22. **July 19th - Aug 2nd - RC1 testing
  23. Aug 3rd  - RC2 tag or final release tag - Assuming nothing was wrong w. RC1
  24.                                            If RC2 then final release pushes out
  25.                                            2 weeks, etc.
  26. Aug 17th - Announce release after ftp uploaded, iso's created and mirrors
  27.            synced.

  28. *The decision to stop beta and go to RC1 is based on the overall quality of
  29. the release, not a specific timeframe. 4 weeks was a rough estimate on how
  30. long this was going to take originally. Based on bugs this was extended
  31. multiple times.

  32. **The 2 weeks listed here assumes an RC candidate that has no issues. After 2
  33.   weeks of feedback/testing if it's good we'll go to the next stage. If there
  34.   are any issues a new RC will be cut and the cycle started over for it.

  35. Pullups processed: 690 since original branch,
  36.                    80 in the last 3 weeks.
  37.                    12 currently open
