So that I cannot type Chinese.
I am using Red Hat 9.0 and installed fcitx successfully. But CTRL+SPACE doesn't work. Every item on the pengiun toolbar is highlighted EXCEPT the PinYin/Qu Wei/Wu Bi/Er Bi/Cang Jie item so no chinese word bar appears.

It is your own fault not to read the manual.

I read all the documents and manuals again and again, just cannot make this dog run. Something is definitely not all right. Maybe the Fcitx cannot find the Chinese font library? Whatever...

The only problem is that you've chosen an old distro.

Actually I am also having trouble in displaying fonts. I copied several .ttf files from Windows and make fonts.dir and fonts.scale and add all necessary path and also configured /etc/fonts/fonts.conf
and even configured /etc/gtk2.0-gtkrc, but the GNOME Preference Font (in my Red Hat interface) never shows the newly installed font name. For Chinese, it's always the god-damned shabby AR PL KaitiM GB, AR PL SungtiL GB and the notorious ZYSong18030.

Maybe because I intalled the SDL stuff which includes the SDL_ttf and the Free Type things?
( www.libsdl.org , www.freetype.org ) I just have no idea...

Then, Red Hat 9 is not the distro you need. Mandriva 2005 will give you a far better experience, I promise.

I would choose debian for my next distribution. However, I am learning to intall Linux from scratch. So next time I will build Linux all by myself.

I don't think you can use LFS in the near future, unless you can solve the problems you mentioned by yourself, because those are newbie questions.

Debian is quite good, only if you are system expert, you know every system elements exactly you need.

您的LOCALE应该设置为中文(如zh_CN.gbk)才能输入中文。还应该设置XMODIFIERS等
